Week 3 is In The Books

This week we spent a lot of time writing, and writing, and writing. While writing has never quite been my strong suit I did enjoy this week. I liked the freedom that we had in picking which writing assignments we wanted to do and how creative we were allowed to be. I started off doing my daily creates since they only took a small portion of my day and the first few days of my week are always the busiest. I found these super fun. For your convenience I have created a post dedicated to this weeks daily creates and attached it below. My favorite one was when we got to explore the words that were created in the year I was born.

After this I worked on the Assignments in the Assignment bank and picked 4 assignments that I found the most intersting and that added up to a total of 12 stars. They are attached below. My favorite assignment that I did was the one titled Another Beautiful Day. I enjoyed this one because it reminded me how much I have to be thankful for. We live in a beautiful world.

After these I went back and read over the article “I link, therefore I am” for the second time and watched the video before I wrote a post about why the movie producer/writer of Sixteen Candles effectively told a story from the 80’s. It is attached below:

Throughout the week I have continued to comment on my classmates thoughtful daily creates as well as their blog posts. Each and every person has been thinking of some truly amazing stuff and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next week.

Sixteen Candles

Growing up I remember watching the movie Sixteen Candles over and over again with my now 16 year old sister. We loved it, we hung on to every scene of the movie with anticipation like we were seeing it again for the first time. The writer knows how to keep the viewer in suspense. To keep them guessing how the situation will ever be resolved. Sixteen Candles is a movie that came out in 1984 and is categorized as both romance and comedy. The main character of the movie (Sam) feels defeated when her 16th birthday doesn’t go as planned. The timing of this movie was great and exactly why this was such a good storytelling move. Up until then, whenever you heard the term “teenage girl” it was because they were being talked about and stereotyped in movies. This movie was written specifically for teenage girls to show things that teenagers might face, not just how they will react. This movie shines an 80’s lens on some things that high schoolers may have faced in both school as well as relationships. One quote from the movie that shows sides of this is when there was a “nerd” who said “I’ve never bagged a babe. I’m not a stud I got the rep in sixth grade and it like stuck with me”. This shows how labels were seen in the 80’s, there’s no getting rid of it. This is why the writer has a great style, he is able to tell us a story that makes us see decades and cultures that we have never even gotten to experience. He was able to let us think we were living in the time period, even if just for a little bit.

Dear Mom, Thank You For Teaching Me to Love the 80's (4 stars)

Dear Mom,

I can’t thank you enough for the amount of love and joy you have given me. You are my best friend, my role model, the first person I go to when I’m upset, and the person that I always call just to tell you how much I miss you and random things that I did during the day. One of the things that I am so appreciative of is that you taught me to love all cultures and decades. You were a teenager in the 80’s and you definitely loved to tell me all about it. Whether it was listening to some of our favorite songs of the 80’s like Hurts So Good, Jack& Diane, Man in the Mirror, or 9 to 5 because we love Dolly Parton. You taught me the fashion of the 80’s, the classic 80’s movies that we still watch today, and you introduced me to the games and technology that was used in the 80’s. I remember bringing up certain objects or games to my friends and them having no clue what it was. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for that. You made me appreciate a decade that I wasn’t even alive for. You made life about so much more than what I can see and that has helped me throughout my life. You are an amazing woman, a mom who loves her children better than we could have ever imagined. Someone who always puts her family first even when you’re struggling. Thank you for the continuous love and support you have given me even after I moved on to college. You will forever be my Momma and I will forever be your baby girl, much love. P.S.- Give the puppies lots of kisses from me.

A Letter To Myself (2 and 1/2 stars)

Dear 10 year old Kayla,

Never give up your dreams. If there is one thing that you should know it is that sometimes it’s impossible to please everyone no matter how hard you try. You are STRONG. You are SMART. You are BRAVE. Don’t waste your time hanging on every word that others say, follow your heart. Some people may question what you want to do in life and that’s okay but follow your heart and your passion. Don’t waste your time in the past, spend time in the present. You will have so many great friends in your life and they are there to lean on in times of happiness and in times of need but don’t let them determine your future. Be nice to your sister, you only get one and you will miss her a lot when you go off to college. Cherish every moment spent with your family as the time will pass way too quickly. You will grow up to be a strong, compassionate, and outgoing woman. Never be afraid to speak up and say how you feel, bottling up your emotions will cause you to get in your head and you don’t want that. Keep being the strong-willed, compassionate, outgoing soul that you are. Good luck!!

Dancing the night away ( 1 and 1/2 stars)

For this assignment I chose to relate it to our class 80’s theme. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun in one of my all time favorite songs. I remember my Junior year of high school I was in a female jazz choir and we did an acapella version of this song. It really just makes you want to sing at the top of your lungs and dance around. Especially when the chorus hits and the music becomes more upbeat. It makes me feel happy and full of life.

Another (Beautiful) Day (4 stars)

We live in such a beautiful world. Yes, there may be broken things around us but there is something so simple about being able to walk outside wherever you may be and look at the trees or the clouds. I recently just booked an Air B&B in the great smokey mountains for spring break with some of my friends and I couldn’t be more excited. Being in nature is the perfect getaway for me.

Outside you will find the most imperfect yet beautiful rocks. Finding places where you can barely sit but can hold onto as you take in the beautiful world around you. You see mountains that may look small yet are so big in person. You can see some towns that look tiny yet may be huge and try and see if you can see cars that look like ants.

In the summertime you can see the most beautiful sunny days. Filled with clear water, a bright sky, and green trees. You see the smiling faces of friends and laughs shared with each other.

Sometimes at night you can go outside and see different colors in the sky. You can see the sun start to go down and the environment you’re in become dim. You can see venues that attract people and small businesses to come together. You can see the beautiful layers in the clouds.

Spending time being creative

This week we were challenged to do 3 daily creates! I found these fun and only taking a few minutes out of my day so it was good to incorporate some form of digital studies into my daily routine.

The first Daily Create that I did was composing a cutup poem from words that were created in the year that I was born (1999). This was so interesting! If it wasn’t for this exercise I would have never known that these words first made their place in the year! The phrase I found the most surprising was the carbon footprint. Mainly because it’s something I always grew up hearing so I assumed it was already a term way before my time. I find this topic interesting because you can reduce your carbon footprint just by switching on and off what vehicles you drive places.

The second daily create asked us to show a legendary creature such as big foot. The Loch Ness Monster duh!! So, what makes it so legendary? This myth started when people started saying there was a large monster with a long neck and one or more humps in the waters of Loch Ness, Scotland. Long footprints were found around the shore and people believed it to be the monster until scientists decided they were hippo tracks.

The third daily create I did was pretty open ended which I loved. It asked us if someone were to open the door what would they find behind the door. Well, I opened the door at my house the other day just to see my baby girl Lily chewing on my parents tv remote. Yes, I probably should have taken the remote instantly but it was just too funny not to take a picture. Lily is a year and a half old and is a Lab/Beagle mix who we just rescued this past December. She can be a little monster sometimes because she has a lot of energy but just as loving!

2nd week in the 80's

This week was fun! I feel like we got to be more creative and interpret daily creates/ assignment banks however we wanted. I went out of order this week and started off with personalizing my blog and making it really reflect me. I chose to use a plant theme as my cover because I am such a plant mom and love the vibe that they give off. I named my blog Kayla’s corner because I feel like it represents an 80’s themed talk show. In blue because that’s my favorite color. I added a photo of myself in the margins and allowed viewers to quickly get to my top 5 posts. I also included a search bar so if someone was visiting my site looking for something specific, they could quickly find it using the search bar.

Next, I got to work on my daily creates. Now obviously I couldn’t do these all at the same time since we were assigned to do them the day that they were posted so I decided to make a blog post that contains all 4 of my daily creates. Please click the post above to see a more in depth summary of the posts. My favorite one was when I had an excuse to spontaneously make French toast!

Throughout the week I have worked on 3 different assignments from the assignment bank which are linked above. I really enjoyed these assignments. I chose the Pinterest assignment because it is a type of social media that I had already had experience with and would have fun doing. The “Six Eyes” post was also very fun to do! Although I struggled a little at first trying to overlay photos I quickly learned the easy way to do it and had fun with it. My 80’s radio commercial was fun because I got to experiment with different sounds and really make it my own. I also got to talk about an item that I grew up having in my house so it allowed me to put in my love for it as well.

Being Creative Daily?

This week we were challenged to get our brains following with creativity and do an assignment that the Daily create twitter page posted that day. I had a lot of fun with these as they usually didn’t take a ton of time but didn’t have straight forward rules and allowed us to interpret things.

For the first daily create that I did which was on January 19th we were challenged to create something that shared where we think that learning should go next. I chose to do mine on teacher innovation in the classroom. This topic is so important to me because as a future educator I always want to find the best ways to help my students learn. When someone hears the word “classroom” or “teaching” their minds often think books and sitting at desks. While yes these things are involved in teaching, that’s not all it is. In fact it is so much more. I would like 2020 to be the year that we change the way society views school and teaching. It can be fun, we can use cool technology to learn.

The next daily create that I did which was on January 20th challenged us to make something that was pertaining to an egg or a chicken. I thought why not make French toast I mean come on, who doesn’t love French toast? I love making French toast and eggs are what make it French toast so I saw it as very appropriate. The only struggle that I faced in this was originally my video was about 3 minutes long because I explained what I was doing as I made it. Twitter only lets you upload video that is about 1 minute and 40 seconds long. I still wanted to show the whole process and not just completely cut out the main part. A fix that I found was downloading a free editor called video short where I could adjust the speed of the video to make it go through faster while still showing all of it. This was a life saver!

The next daily create which I did on January 21st challenged us to respond to facebooks Vice President of Public Policy GIF. Essentially apple wanted to add noise to data to keep it anonymous and not send off too much data. Facebook said that wouldn’t work for them and what they do. The VP then said “We don’t do surveillance capitalism, that by definition is surreptitious; we work hard to be transparent.” This essentially means that they say they protect your privacy but also provide advertising based on other peoples preferences. This gif represents the VP making things sound like they are for the people when really that’s probably not the case.

The last daily create that I did on January 22nd challenged us to create a visual haiku. This post I made about the UC while I was waiting for a few of my friends to eat lunch. This was super fun and I love that I cold pick which location I wanted to talk about. I also like that I didn’t necessarily have to find the words for my haiku yet I could let it generate one about my location. This one was super simple!

Just Keep Dreaming (My Dream Room)

For my last assignment from the assignment bank I chose one that I have been doing for years. The assignment was to create a Pinterest board with photos of things that I would like to have in my dream bedroom. For the convenience of people reading this I will post the pictures below however if you would like to visit the full board you can do so visiting this link: https://pin.it/km4zxz3rdnyh5e

My bed! I am a sucker for a large bed with an overflowing blanket like comforter. This picture really reflects everything I would like in a bed- lots of pillows, neutral colors, a soft comforter type blanket (fuzzy: not your normal comforter). Looks like I could just jump right in it!

Yes, I am a crazy plant parent. There’s just something about living plants that really brightens up a room and makes you feel like you’re caring for something. I currently have around 4 living plants in my room that are like my little babies, I love watching them grow. Maybe because I can’t have dogs at my house?? Oh well, I’d love to have a plant corner where I can hang and place my plants near the window and keep them all in one place so I remember to water them.

Big windows!!! I am a sucker for natural light. In my dream bedroom I would love to have a big window that I could sit at and do homework or chat with friends. I’ve found that overhead lights give me really bad headaches quite often so I have always wanted to be around natural light. This setup just looks so cozy and inviting.

I don’t know about you but I love to take showers. I could take multiple a day if only my water bill wouldn’t get higher and higher. I would love to have my own attached bathroom that I could get ready in and use to relax and pamper myself when needed.

This assignment was so fun! I already had a Pinterest account so I just used my personal one and looked through pictures of what I’d like to have in my ideal bedroom.
